In the optical coupler

In the optical coupler

An optical coupler is a device that splits, combines, or redistributes light signals between two or more optical fibers or paths.Definition and FunctionAn optical coupler is a passive optical device used to manage light signals within optical systems, such as fiber-optic communication networks or optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanners. It can split a single input signal into multiple outputs or combine multiple input signals into a single output, enabling efficient signal distribution, monitoring, or multiplexing in optical networks . Unlike active devices, most optical couplers do not require electrical power to operate .Working PrincipleOptical couplers operate by optical power transfer between closely aligned fibers or planar waveguides. Common mechanisms include evanescent field coupling and mode interference, which allow light to be redistributed according to a specific coupling ratio (e.g., 50/50, 70/30, or 90/10). In fused biconical taper (FBT) couplers, fibers are twisted, heated, and stretched to fuse their cores, creating a region where light can transfer between fibers. Planar lightwave circuit (PLC) couplers use optical splitter chips to divide light evenly across multiple outputs .Types of Optical CouplersOptical couplers can be classified based on their construction and function:Splitters: Divide one input signal into two or more outputs. Y-couplers provide equal power distribution, while T-couplers have uneven distribution .Combiners: Merge two or more input signals into a single output .X-couplers, star couplers, and tree couplers: Used for complex network topologies and multi-port signal distribution .Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) couplers: Combine or separate signals of different wavelengths for multiplexing applications .ApplicationsOptical couplers are widely used in:Telecommunications and data networks: For signal splitting, monitoring, and redundancy in fiber-optic systems .Passive Optical Networks (PON) and CATV: To distribute signals efficiently across multiple endpoints .Medical imaging (OCT): To split light into sample and reference beams and recombine reflected light for interference-based imaging .Key Performance ParametersImportant metrics for optical couplers include insertion loss, splitting ratio accuracy, polarization-dependent loss, and wavelength uniformity. These ensure reliable signal transmission and compliance with standards such as ITU-T G.671 and Telcordia GR-1209/1221 . In summary, an optical coupler is a fundamental component in optical systems, enabling flexible and efficient management of light signals for communication, sensing, and imaging applications.
