Honduras s international fiber optic cable

Honduras s international fiber optic cable

Honduras is connected internationally through the ARCOS-1 submarine cable system, linking it to multiple countries in the Americas and the Caribbean.Submarine Cable ConnectivityHonduras is a landing point for the ARCOS-1 (Americas Region Caribbean Optical-Ring System), an 8,700 km submarine cable connecting 24 landing points across 15 countries, including the United States, Mexico, Central American nations, and several Caribbean islands . The system provides high-capacity international connectivity with twelve fiber pairs on repeaterless segments and three fiber pairs on repeatered segments, offering a total end-of-life capacity of 8.4 Tbps . This cable is critical for Honduras's access to global internet and telecommunications networks.Domestic Fiber InfrastructureHonduras has been gradually upgrading its domestic fiber network, particularly in urban centers, to support broadband demand . Fixed-line penetration remains low at 4.9%, and rural areas face challenges due to topography and low investment incentives . Despite these limitations, private telecom operators have invested in fiber-based infrastructure to improve internet speeds and reliability in major cities .Fiber Optic TradeHonduras imports significant quantities of fiber optic cables to support its network expansion. In 2023, imports totaled $13.3 million, primarily from China ($7.6M), Mexico ($3.98M), Spain ($838k), Turkey ($287k), and the United States ($212k) . Exports of optical fibers and cables were much smaller, at $303k, mainly to neighboring countries like Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua . Overall, the broader category of insulated wire and optical fiber cables accounted for $1.22 billion in exports in 2023, representing 17% of total Honduran exports .Strategic ImportanceThe ARCOS-1 connection and ongoing fiber imports are essential for Honduras to improve broadband access, support economic growth, and integrate into regional and global digital networks. Continued investment in both international and domestic fiber infrastructure is critical to meet rising demand for high-speed internet and digital services .
