Core Switch Optical and Electrical Ports

Core Switch Optical and Electrical Ports

Core switches use optical ports for long-distance, high-speed connections and electrical ports for short-distance, copper-based connections, with hybrid switches supporting both for flexible deployment.Optical PortsOptical ports on core switches transmit data using light through fiber optic cables, enabling high-speed and long-distance communication. They typically require optical modules such as SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, or QSFP28, supporting speeds from 1.25G to 100G and beyond . Optical ports can cover distances up to 100 kilometers, depending on the module and fiber type, making them ideal for core and aggregation layers in data centers and campus networks . Common connector types include LC, SC, and MPO, and optical ports can also accept electrical port modules for copper connections if needed .Electrical PortsElectrical ports use copper cabling (typically UTP) and RJ45 connectors to transmit electrical signals. They are designed for short-reach connections, generally up to 100 meters, and support speeds from 10M to 10G, depending on the module . Electrical ports are often integrated into switches, eliminating the need for optical-electrical conversion. They are suitable for connecting servers, access points, and other devices within the same building or rack . For 10G connections, Cat6A or higher cabling is recommended to maintain signal integrity .Hybrid SwitchesSome modern switches, such as the Huawei CloudEngine S5732-H Series, feature hybrid optical-electrical ports, combining the benefits of both technologies. These switches can provide 24 optical and 24 electrical downlink ports, along with high-speed uplinks (25G, 40G, or 100G), supporting long-distance PoE++ and 10G access for Wi-Fi 6 APs . Hybrid switches offer flexibility in deployment, allowing network designers to optimize for both distance and speed requirements without replacing the entire switch infrastructure.Key DifferencesFeatureOptical PortElectrical PortTransmission MediumFiber optic (light)Copper cable (electrical signal)Maximum Speed1.25G – 100G+10M – 10GMaximum DistanceUp to 100 km~100 metersConnector TypesLC, SC, MPORJ45Typical UseCore/aggregation, long-distance linksAccess layer, short-distance connectionsModule RequirementOptical modules (SFP/SFP+/QSFP)Electrical port modules or integrated RJ45Deployment ConsiderationsDistance and speed requirements: Use optical ports for high-speed, long-distance links; electrical ports for short, cost-effective connections.Cabling infrastructure: Fiber optic cables are more expensive but support higher speeds and longer distances; copper is cheaper and easier to deploy for short runs.Power and heat: High-speed electrical modules (10G) consume more power and generate heat, which must be considered in switch deployment .Future scalability: Optical ports provide better scalability for future upgrades to 25G, 40G, or 100G networks . In summary, core switches leverage optical ports for backbone connectivity and electrical ports for short-range access, while hybrid switches provide the flexibility to mix both, optimizing network performance, cost, and scalability.
