A dual-core switch setup provides redundancy, high availability, and load balancing for enterprise or data center networks, typically implemented with spine-leaf or stacked architectures and supported by protocols like OSPF, VRRP, or MC-LAG.Core Design PrinciplesRedundancy and High Availability: Dual-core switches are deployed to eliminate single points of failure. Each core switch should have redundant links to access switches and firewalls, ensuring continuous connectivity if one switch fails. Implementing spanning tree protocols (RSTP/MST) or Flex Link can prevent loops while maintaining failover capabilities, and link aggregation (EtherChannel or MC-LAG) can combine multiple physical links for higher throughput and redundancy . Routing and Load Balancing: Use dynamic routing protocols like OSPF or BGP between core switches and upstream devices to manage traffic efficiently. Advertise default routes to firewalls and configure OSPF costs to control preferred paths. Equal-Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) routing in spine-leaf designs allows traffic to be distributed evenly across multiple paths .
