High Temperature Resistant Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor

High Temperature Resistant Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor

Heat-resistant fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors can operate reliably at temperatures up to 600–1000°C, making them suitable for harsh environments such as nuclear reactors and high-temperature industrial systems.OverviewFiber Bragg grating sensors are optical sensors that reflect specific wavelengths of light, which shift in response to strain or temperature changes. In heat-resistant FBGs, the grating is engineered to maintain stability under extreme temperatures, allowing accurate monitoring of structural and thermal parameters in challenging environments .High-Temperature PerformanceHeat-resistant FBGs have been demonstrated to withstand temperatures of 600°C and beyond, with some designs capable of operating up to 1000°C. These sensors are particularly useful in nuclear power plants, liquid sodium-cooled fast reactors, and other high-temperature systems where conventional sensors fail . The sensors maintain their reflection wavelength stability and sensitivity even under prolonged exposure to heat, strain, and radiation.Fabrication TechniquesAdvanced fabrication methods, such as femtosecond laser processing, are employed to inscribe gratings directly into the fiber core. This technique enhances thermal stability and allows the sensors to endure harsh mechanical and radiative conditions. Packaging methods, including welding, brazing, soldering, and the use of noble metal adhesives, further improve durability and facilitate installation on metallic surfaces like steel blades or piping systems .ApplicationsStructural Health Monitoring (SHM): Heat-resistant FBGs are used to monitor strain and vibration in high-temperature piping, turbine blades, and reactor components .Nuclear Reactors: They enable real-time temperature and strain measurements in Generation IV reactors, including sodium-cooled fast reactors, where temperatures can exceed 600°C and radiation levels are high .Aerospace and Industrial Systems: FBGs provide reliable sensing in engines, turbines, and other high-temperature machinery, offering immunity to electromagnetic interference and explosive atmospheres .AdvantagesHigh sensitivity to strain and temperature changesImmunity to electromagnetic interferenceCapability to operate in extreme temperatures and radiation environmentsCompact and lightweight, suitable for integration into complex systems ChallengesFragility of optical fibers requires careful handlingHigh cost of interrogation systems for real-time monitoringLimited scanning speed in some reflection spectrum detection systems, which may affect high-frequency measurements Future DirectionsResearch is ongoing to improve wavelength-multiplexed FBG arrays, enhance radiation resistance, and develop faster interrogation systems for dynamic monitoring in high-temperature and high-radiation environments. These advancements aim to expand the use of heat-resistant FBG sensors in next-generation energy systems and aerospace applications .
