A passive optical network (PON) is a fiber-optic system that delivers high-speed data from a single source to multiple endpoints using unpowered optical splitters, enabling cost-effective, reliable broadband connectivity.OverviewA PON is a point-to-multipoint fiber network that connects an Internet service provider (ISP) or central office to multiple end users without requiring powered devices in the field . Unlike traditional point-to-point fiber networks, which require a dedicated fiber for each user, PON shares a single fiber among many subscribers using passive optical splitters . This design reduces both deployment costs and operational complexity.Key ComponentsOptical Line Terminal (OLT): Located at the service provider's central office, the OLT sends and receives optical signals to and from multiple users .Optical Splitters: Passive devices that divide a single optical signal into multiple branches, allowing one fiber to serve many endpoints.
