A semi-laser diode (SLD) generates a high-intensity, partially coherent light beam, combining features of both laser diodes and LEDs for applications requiring precise yet broad light emission.OverviewA semi-laser diode (SLD) is a type of semiconductor laser that emits light through stimulated emission like a laser diode but with reduced coherence and divergence, making it less directional than a fully coherent laser beam while more focused than an LED . This intermediate behavior allows SLDs to provide high optical power with a broader spectral width, which is useful in applications where full laser coherence is unnecessary or could cause interference.How It WorksSLDs operate using a p-n semiconductor junction. When a forward bias voltage is applied, electrons from the n-type region and holes from the p-type region recombine in the active region, releasing photons. Unlike conventional laser diodes, SLDs are designed to suppress optical feedback, preventing full lasing and producing amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) .
