Relays must be reliable, sensitive, and fast, discriminating between conditions that require immediate action and those that do not . Proper relay operation prevents equipment damage, reduces downtime, and enhances overall system safety.Basic ComponentsA typical relay protection system includes:Protective relays: Detect abnormal conditions such as overcurrent, overvoltage, or faults .Current transformers (CTs): Step down high line currents to a manageable level for the relay, typically 5A or 1A secondary .Circuit breakers: Operated by the relay to disconnect the faulty section.Station battery: Provides energy to trip the breaker when AC supply is unavailable .Operating PrinciplesProtective relays operate by sensing abnormal electrical quantities (current, voltage, impedance, or frequency) and initiating a trip signal to the breaker . Key terms include:Pickup value: The threshold at which the relay begins to operate.Operating time: Duration from exceeding the pickup value to the relay closing its contacts.Reset value: The level below which the relay returns to its normal state .
