Pigtail and melt fiber manufacturing process

The fabrication of fiber optic pigtails involves precise fiber preparation, splicing, epoxy injection, melting/solidification, polishing, and rigorous quality control to ensure low-loss, high-performance connections.Fiber Selection and PreparationThe process begins with selecting high-quality optical fibers with low attenuation and high bandwidth, suitable for single-mode or multi-mode applications . The fibers are then stripped of their outer jackets and coatings using specialized strippers to expose the core and cladding. After stripping, the fibers are cleaned to remove dust, debris, or contaminants that could affect signal transmission .Splicing and Connector AttachmentFibers are aligned and attached to connectors or ferrules using either fusion splicing or mechanical splicing. Fusion splicing involves melting the fiber ends with an electric arc to create a seamless, low-loss joint, while mechanical splicing uses alignment sleeves to hold fibers in precise alignment . After splicing, epoxy adhesive (commonly 353 epoxy) is injected into the ferrule to secure the fiber in place .Melting and SolidificationOnce the fiber is inserted into the connector, the epoxy is cured using a vertical or horizontal solidification furnace, which melts and solidifies the adhesive to form a stable, durable bond . This step ensures the fiber remains fixed and aligned within the connector, minimizing insertion loss and reflection.Polishing and CleaningAfter solidification, the fiber end faces are polished using precision polishing machines to achieve a smooth, flat surface. This step is critical for maximizing light transmission and minimizing back reflection. Ultrasonic cleaning is often performed before and after polishing to remove any residual particles .Quality ControlEach pigtail undergoes microscopic inspection (typically 400x–600x magnification) to check for dirt, scratches, or misalignment. Performance tests, including insertion loss and return loss measurements, are conducted to ensure the pigtail meets industry standards such as IEC and TIA specifications . Any defective units are reworked or discarded to maintain high-quality output.PackagingFinally, the completed pigtails are packaged according to customer specifications, ensuring protection during transport and storage . This comprehensive process ensures that fiber optic pigtails provide reliable, low-loss connections essential for telecommunications and data networking applications.
