Grounding Requirements for Distribution Box Structure

Grounding Requirements for Distribution Box Structure

Distribution boxes should be grounded using dedicated conductors connected to factory or central grounding points, ensuring a total system resistance below 0.1 Ohm for safety and reliability.Grounding Conductors and Wire SizingFor proper grounding, each distribution box and controller must be connected to a reliable ground. In the US, a 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) ground wire is standard, while in other markets, a 6 mm² wire is typically used . For connections between the mounting plate and spindle plate, larger wires such as 16 mm² (or 6 AWG / 13.29 mm² in the US) are recommended to maintain low resistance, especially for long tool cables or multiple spindles . The total grounding resistance should be less than 0.1 Ohm.Connection Points and BondingDistribution boxes often have factory-preset threaded studs on the base plate or side walls for grounding . These provide strong mechanical and electrical connections. Grounding wires should be attached from these studs to the mounting plate, and then from the mounting plate to the central grounding point. For moving parts like stainless steel doors, flexible copper braided tape is used to maintain low-resistance bonding despite motion . Anti-loosening washers and proper torque are recommended to prevent loosening over time.Material ConsiderationsThe grounding conductor and connectors should match the enclosure material to prevent galvanic corrosion, particularly in stainless steel boxes . Contact surfaces should be cleaned of coatings or oxides to reduce resistance, and conductive paste can be applied in high-humidity or outdoor environments to prevent oxidation and maintain reliable contact .System Integration and SafetyAll metallic components, including enclosures, raceways, and equipment, should be bonded into a continuous grounding system . This ensures low-impedance paths for fault currents, allowing protective devices to operate quickly and safely. Grounding also diverts transients such as lightning safely to earth. Equipment grounding conductors should ideally be sized equal to phase conductors for improved fault clearing and power quality . Maximum resistance for safety testing is generally 25 Ohms, but industrial applications aim for much lower values, typically below 0.1 Ohm .Summary of Best PracticesUse dedicated grounding conductors sized according to local standards (10 AWG in the US, 6 mm² elsewhere).Connect distribution box studs to the mounting plate, then to the central grounding point.Bond moving parts with flexible copper tape and use anti-loosening hardware.Match connector materials to the enclosure to prevent corrosion.Maintain total grounding resistance below 0.1 Ohm for reliable fault protection.Ensure all metallic components are bonded into a continuous system for safety and power quality. Following these guidelines ensures electrical safety, compliance with standards, and reliable operation of distribution boxes in industrial and commercial installations .
