Typical attenuation is around 1 dB per connection, and connectors may lose 10–20% of light, but they allow for easy reconfiguration and maintenance. Common connector types include SC, LC, ST, and FC, each with specific coupling mechanisms and applications .SC (Subscriber Connector): Square push-pull design, widely used in FTTH and data centers, with low return loss for RF video or GPON networks .LC (Lucent Connector): Miniaturized 1.25mm ferrule, ideal for high-density applications in modern data centers .ST (Straight Tip): Bayonet-style twist-lock, used in legacy or industrial networks .FC (Ferrule Connector): Threaded coupling, suitable for high-vibration environments like factories or railways .2. Cold Splicing (Emergency Connection)Cold splicing, also called mechanical splicing, joins fibers using mechanical and chemical methods without heat. It is quick and reliable for short-term use, with typical attenuation of 0.1–0.3 dB per point. The fiber ends are carefully aligned in a sleeve and clamped, allowing trained personnel to complete a connection in about five minutes. However, connections may become unstable over time, making this method suitable for emergency or temporary repairs .3. Fusion Splicing (Permanent Connection)Fusion splicing is a permanent method where fiber ends are melted and fused using an electric arc. It provides the lowest attenuation (0.01–0.03 dB per point) and is ideal for long-distance or semi-permanent installations. The resulting joint is nearly as strong as a single fiber and is protected in special containers to ensure durability .4. Non-Splicing Physical ConnectionThis method uses V-groove designs and matching liquids to achieve nearly 100% fusion success without traditional splicing. It is suitable for Fiber to the Room (FTTR) solutions and provides a permanent physical connection with minimal light loss. This approach combines the convenience of connectors with the low attenuation of splicing .Best PracticesCable Type Consideration: Single-mode fibers are preferred for long-distance communication, while multimode fibers are suitable for shorter distances with higher data rates .Proper Handling: Maintain minimum bend radius, avoid tension, and use proper cable management to prevent signal degradation .Testing: Use OTDRs and visual fault locators to verify connection integrity and detect imperfections .Connector Selection: Choose connectors based on network density, environment, and required performance, balancing insertion loss, return loss, and mechanical stability . By understanding these methods and selecting the appropriate connection type, network installers can ensure optimal performance, reliability, and longevity of fiber optic networks.
