An optical module contains optoelectronic devices, functional circuits, and optical interfaces that enable the conversion between electrical and optical signals.Core ComponentsOptical Transmitter (TOSA) The Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA) includes a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED) that converts electrical signals into modulated optical signals. It also contains a monitoring photodiode to regulate output power and an optical interface for connecting to fiber cables .Optical Receiver (ROSA) The Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA) contains a photodetector diode that converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. It often includes pre-amplifiers and signal conditioning circuits to ensure accurate signal recovery .Driver and Functional Circuits Internal driver chips process the input electrical signals and control the laser or LED output. Additional functional circuits manage signal timing, modulation, and automatic optical power control (APC) to maintain consistent signal strength .Optical and Electrical Interfaces Optical modules have optical ports for fiber connections and electrical interfaces for connecting to network equipment like switches or routers. These interfaces follow standards defined by multi-source agreements (MSAs) to ensure compatibility .Housing and Protective Components The module is enclosed in a metal or plastic housing for protection. It may include a dust cap to prevent contamination of the optical interface and a boot for secure connections in certain form factors like SFP .Additional FeaturesAutomatic Optical Power Control (APC) ensures stable output from the transmitter.Monitoring circuits provide feedback on temperature, voltage, and optical power.Form factors such as SFP, SFP+, QSFP, and CFP determine the module's size, data rate, and application .
