Single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables with compatible mechanical connectors are suitable for cold splicing.Suitable Fiber TypesCold splicing, also known as mechanical splicing, can be performed on both single-mode (SMF) and multi-mode fibers (MMF), provided the fibers are compatible with the mechanical connectors used. These fibers typically have standard diameters (125 µm core for SMF, 50 or 62.5 µm for MMF) and are coated with protective jackets that can be stripped for splicing . Cold splicing is particularly useful for on-site installations, temporary connections, or environments where fusion splicing equipment is unavailable .Connector and Cable ConsiderationsMechanical connectors used in cold splicing generally consist of a ferrule and a body.
