Conductive fiber optic cables in substations must be grounded per NEC 770.100, with metallic members bonded to the grounding electrode as close as practicable to the point of entry or termination.NEC RequirementsThe National Electrical Code (NEC) 2014 specifies grounding requirements for fiber optic cables containing metallic components. According to NEC 770.93, non-current-carrying metallic members of optical fiber cables entering or terminating outside a building must either be grounded or interrupted by an insulating joint. Grounding is required when the cable is exposed to contact with power conductors, and the connection should occur as close as possible to the point of entrance or termination .
