Core Optical Module Switch

The optical module in a core switch converts electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa, enabling long-distance, high-speed data transmission over fiber-optic networks.Core FunctionAn optical module acts as a photoelectric converter within a core switch, operating at the physical layer of the OSI model. Its primary function is to convert electrical signals from the switch into optical signals for transmission over fiber-optic cables and then convert incoming optical signals back into electrical signals for the switch to process . This conversion allows the switch to overcome the inherent limitations of electrical signal transmission, such as short distance and susceptibility to interference .Components and Working PrincipleOptical modules typically consist of:Optical transmitters (laser diodes or LEDs) that emit modulated light signalsOptical receivers (photodetector diodes) that detect incoming light and convert it back to electrical signalsDriver and preamplifier circuits to process signals at the correct bit rateOptical interfaces and connectors for secure fiber connections The transmitting interface receives electrical signals from the switch, which are processed by internal driver chips. The processed signals drive the laser or LED to emit optical signals. These signals travel through fiber-optic cables to the receiving interface, where they are converted back into electrical signals and sent to the switch for further processing .Role in Network ArchitectureIn a core network, switches act as traffic hubs, forwarding and exchanging data frames. However, they cannot directly transmit signals over long distances due to electrical limitations.
