Fiber Optic Cable Laying Frame Tension Adjustment Method

Fiber Optic Cable Laying Frame Tension Adjustment Method

Maintain pulling tension below the cable's maximum rated tensile force, typically around 600 lbf for OSP loose tube or ribbon cables, using breakaway grips and swivels to prevent twisting and damage.Maximum Pulling TensionWhen laying fiber optic cables from a frame or reel, it is critical not to exceed the maximum specified tensile force for the cable, which is usually provided in the cable datasheet. For example, many OSP loose tube or ribbon cables have a maximum pulling tension of 600 lbf. Exceeding this tension can cause fiber breakage, increased attenuation, or permanent deformation of the cable core . Always check the manufacturer's specifications before installation.Use of Breakaway Grips and SwivelsA cable breakaway rated at or below the maximum cable load should be used to ensure the pulling tension does not exceed safe limits. Swivels are essential at the cable end to prevent accumulation of twists during the pull, which can stress the fibers and damage the cable . The pulling grip should ideally engage both the jacket and the strength members, sometimes requiring partial removal of the jacket to achieve optimum grip without exceeding the cable's tensile rating.Handling TechniquesPull on strength members only: Fiber optic cables often contain Kevlar or fiberglass rods as strength members. Pulling directly on the fibers or jacket can cause damage .Figure-8 storage and handling: When laying long cable runs, use the figure-8 technique to prevent twisting. Lay the cable in large loops (10–20 feet), then flip the loops so the loose end is on top for the next pull .Bend radius compliance: Do not exceed the minimum bend radius during tensioning. For loose tube and ribbon cables, the bend radius is typically 20 times the cable diameter under tension and 10 times under static conditions .Lubrication: Use compatible fiber optic cable lubricants when pulling through conduits to reduce tension and prevent damage .Safety and Installation Best PracticesEnsure the installation path is free of sharp edges, rocks, or other objects that could crush or pinch the cable .Pull slowly and steadily, monitoring tension throughout the installation. For long runs, consider using automated pullers with tension control to maintain consistent force and prevent exceeding the cable's rated load .Avoid twisting or spinning the cable off the reel; always roll it off to prevent stress on the fibers . By following these guidelines, fiber optic cables can be safely installed from a laying frame while minimizing the risk of mechanical damage, excessive attenuation, or long-term reliability issues.
