Distribution boxes should be equipped with properly selected and positioned SPDs to protect electrical equipment from transient overvoltages, using a combination of Type 1 and Type 2 devices with short, direct connections and appropriate overcurrent protection.Types of Surge Protective Devices (SPDs)Type 1 SPD: Installed at the main distribution board or power entry point to protect against external surges, such as lightning strikes. These devices handle high-voltage surges and are connected to the building's grounding system for robust diversion of surge energy .Type 2 SPD: Installed within distribution boards to protect downstream circuits and equipment from internal surges, such as those caused by switching operations or motor startups. They provide medium-intensity surge protection and are the most common SPD in distribution panels .Placement GuidelinesMain Distribution Board: Place Type 1 SPDs close to the main busbar to minimize the path for surge energy, ensuring fast response and effective protection .Sub-Distribution Boards: Install Type 2 SPDs near sensitive equipment or in sub-panels to provide an additional layer of protection, especially for IT rooms or control panels .Cascading SPDs: Use multiple SPDs in series from the main board to sub-distribution boards to handle surges progressively and protect sensitive electronics .Distance Considerations: Maintain at least 10 meters between voltage switching SPDs and voltage limiting SPDs, and 5 meters between two voltage limiting SPDs. If an SPD is more than 30 meters from the equipment, add another SPD near the equipment with at least 8kA current capacity .Wiring and Overcurrent ProtectionKeep SPD connection leads short and straight, ideally less than 0.5 meters and never exceeding 1 meter, to reduce voltage drop and improve response time .SPDs must be protected against overcurrent using an MCB or in-built fuse. The overcurrent device should not be the main DNO fuse to avoid disconnecting the supply during SPD failure .The SPD and its overcurrent protection device together form the SPD assembly (SPDA), which should be coordinated with the main distribution board protection .Maintenance and TestingTest SPDs every six months for warning signs such as burned connectors or tripped indicators .Replace SPDs every 3–5 years or according to manufacturer recommendations, as their protective components degrade over time .Clearly label each SPD for easy identification and maintenance .Additional ConsiderationsChoose SPDs that comply with standards like UL 1449 and UL 508A to ensure safety and reliability .Consider factors such as response time, service life, breaking capacity, flow capacity, and humidity resistance when selecting SPDs .Ensure SPDs are installed before RCDs to prevent nuisance tripping during surge events . By following these guidelines, a distribution box can provide robust protection against both external and internal surges, safeguarding sensitive equipment and maintaining electrical system reliability.
