Optical cable stripping and splicing operation

Optical cable stripping and splicing operation

Optical cable stripping and splicing involve carefully exposing fiber cores, preparing end faces, and joining fibers using fusion or mechanical splicing to ensure minimal signal loss.Cable StrippingStripping an optical cable is the first step in splicing and requires precision to avoid damaging the fibers. Begin by removing the outer jacket using a cable stripper, exposing the inner layers such as strength members (aramid yarn) and buffer tubes. The stripping length is typically 50–100 cm, depending on the splice type, and must be done with controlled force to prevent fiber breakage . After exposing the fibers, use a fiber optic stripper to remove the buffer coating from each fiber, leaving the bare glass core ready for splicing . Always wear safety glasses and work in a clean area to handle sharp fiber shards safely .Fiber PreparationOnce stripped, the fiber ends must be cleaned and cleaved. Use lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to remove contaminants, then a high-precision cleaver to cut the fiber at a perfect 90-degree angle. The quality of the end face directly affects splice performance, so careful preparation is critical . For single-core fibers, a fiber protection sleeve is inserted before stripping to protect the bare fiber during fusion .Splicing MethodsFusion SplicingFusion splicing is the permanent method where two fiber ends are aligned and fused using heat, typically from an electric arc. This method provides low insertion loss (~0.1 dB) and minimal back reflection, making it ideal for long-term or high-performance networks . Steps include:Align the fibers in a fusion splicer.Fuse the fibers using the splicer's arc.Protect the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve or similar protective covering.Test the splice using a visual fault locator (VFL) or OTDR to ensure signal integrity .Mechanical SplicingMechanical splicing is a temporary or quick method where fibers are aligned inside a sleeve with index-matching gel. It does not melt the fibers together, resulting in slightly higher loss (~0.3 dB) but allows for easy disconnection or rapid deployment . This method is often used for short-term repairs or temporary connections.Safety and Best PracticesAlways wear eye protection and handle fibers carefully to avoid injury .Dispose of fiber scraps properly to prevent contamination or injury .Maintain clean tools and splicer electrodes to ensure high-quality splices .Follow manufacturer guidelines for fusion splicer settings and protective sleeves .Sealing and FinishingAfter splicing, the fiber and splice box must be sealed properly. Ensure the splice is positioned evenly, and apply sealing tape or covers to protect the joint from environmental factors . Proper sealing ensures long-term reliability and prevents moisture or dust from affecting the splice. By following these steps carefully, technicians can achieve high-quality, low-loss fiber optic splices that maintain network performance and durability.
