Junction box fusion splicing main line

Junction box fusion splicing main line

Fusion splicing in a junction box ensures a permanent, low-loss connection for main fiber optic lines while protecting the fibers from environmental damage.Junction Box Selection and SetupA fiber optic splice closure (junction box) provides a secure environment for splicing and protecting fiber optic cables. For mainline applications, in-line splice closures are commonly used; they are cylindrical or flat and can be mounted aerially, buried, or underground, offering space for multiple fiber splices and protection against water, dust, and mechanical stress . Dome-type closures are typically used for buried installations and provide vertical access to splices . Choose a closure with sufficient ports to accommodate current and future fiber counts. Inside the closure, splice trays organize and secure fibers, preventing bending beyond the minimum radius and providing strain relief . Trays can be swing-out or stackable, depending on the enclosure design.Fusion Splicing ProcedureSafety First: Wear high-rated safety goggles and cut-resistant gloves. Handle fiber shards carefully and dispose of them in a dedicated fiber waste container .Fiber Preparation: Strip the outer jacket (3–5 cm) and buffer coating (typically 250 µm for single fibers) using precision strippers. Clean the exposed fiber with isopropyl alcohol to remove oils .Cleaving: Use a precision cleaver to create a flat, mirror-like fiber end. A poor cleave can cause high splice loss or failure .Splicing: Place fibers in the fusion splicer's V-grooves, ensuring proper alignment. Activate the electric arc to fuse the fibers, creating a continuous optical path with minimal reflection and attenuation .Protection: Cover the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve or protective tube. Secure the fibers in the splice tray, maintaining bend radius and strain relief .Quality ControlInspect the splice under a microscope to ensure proper alignment and cleave quality .Measure splice loss using an optical power meter or OTDR to verify low-loss performance, typically
